Time: 6.30pm [...]

PRIVATE VIEW:

THEN AND THERE, HERE AND NOW

BY PETER ANDERSON

Time: 6.30pm – 12 midnight
Door: -

A private view exhibiting Peter Anderson’s early work records a rarely-seen alternative ’80s

Working closely with his subjects – many of whom have since become household names – his photographs capture the energy of an era when music, fashion and politics first collided. It is a time that is still deeply influential today.
Anderson’s huge, five foot by four foot photographic prints currently sell alongside works by Warhol, Basquiat and Banksy. They reflect a fascination with what is now called “Urban Art” that started when the Royal College funded his first trip to New York, where he made iconic images of early hip-hop street style.
Then and There, Here and Now includes portraits – some never before seen – made while Anderson was a staff photographer at New Musical Express. The subjects represent a Who’s Who of music, including Madonna, Iggy Pop, Mick Jagger, Tom Waits, Run DMC, Marvin Gaye, Paul Weller and Blur’s Damon Albarn. A young Bono stands with fists raised, ready to take on the world as it turned out. The Clash’s late Joe Strummer gazes intently into the lens in a haunting portrait taken on London train tracks.

Anderson’s work is concerned with energy, often translated into movement. Far from the careful, artful poses that are often characterise the image-conscious 80s, these spontaneous shots reveal the sheer vitality of the era. In retrospect it becomes a blur of ideas.

From music, Anderson moved on to other areas. His portraits of film directors and actors, including Lindsay Anderson, Robert Altman and John Hurt have been the subject of an exhibition. His shots of one of his heroes, J.G. Ballard, presage a Ballardian interest in the car as metaphor. Frieze magazine described a previous Anderson exhibition as “a passionate exploration of the world of high performance cars in which landscape, individuals and vehicles were joined in religious ecstasy.”

Some of this work will be shown at Then and There, Here and Now, together with more recent work that spans powerful portraits of young men serving in the armed forces, and photography of found objects made directly on old Devere and Lietz enlargers, in the experimental spirit of early art photography, characterised by Man Ray.

WE CAN TALK

This Saturday sees the next installment of We Can Talk at The Book Club – a mixed bag of a night with one underlining mission: to make you move! Back from a hiatus after the last party which The Filthy Dukes absolutely smashed we have for you an all-star line-up of acts.

Rapper/singer/playboy NIYI of SuperSuper fame (http://www.myspace.com/niyi) is something of a magician in our eyes as he must be the hardest-working/playing man in music. As well as having performed at Reading festival, Fabric, Glastonbury ‘08 and ‘09 – Niyi has appeared on Big Brother’s Big Mouth of all places!

Next up is My Panda Shall Fly providing us with a special old-skool feel-good performance to woo the pants off you. While he works off the carnival hangover, post inappropriate photos of yourself on his Myspace page here: (http://www.myspace.com/mpsf)

One very special selector playing for us is chuggy, space-disco wonderboy Kid Who (http://www.myspace.com/djkidwho). He is guaranteed to immerse you in an ethereal state with his special blend of cosmic disco beats.

Warming up for us is lovable funster mister Alex Warren of Orlando Boom fame who after throwing some insane parties all over London is ready to get behind the decks and make you move all night long. (http://www.orlandoboom.net/)

Last but by no means least is Mr. Pixel (Circle) armed with some shimmering italo-disco classics and pop acapellas for your trouble.
This party is going to be a corker! We’ll see you on the floor

Take a lesson or just enjoy some great Blues DJs this is a night for all. Come and dance or just chill in the lounge area.

Take an absolute beginner lesson at 7-8pm and then enjoy a great evening of delicious blues msuic and dancing.

What is blues dancing?

Blues dancing is a modern term used to describe a family of historical African-American dances that were danced to blues music dating as far back as 1905. Blues dancing in swing dance communities today may range from traditional blues dances to much less historically grounded forms. A more freestyle form of partnered dancing has slowly developed alongside this process of rediscovery and popularizing of blues dance traditions since the 1980s. Partially based on the principles of partner connection, aesthetics and approaches to rhythm and timing of Lindy Hop, this style form often combines elements of Foxtrot, Argentine Tango, modern dance and general club dancing. Today, blues music and dancing has many different styles and can be found anywhere in the world! It’s all about finding your own style and interpretation of the music.

FUTURE HUMAN: CREATIVE CURRENT

Creativity is the ability to generate new ideas and turn that thought into action. It’s the engine oil of innovation, a capacity we all have, and a process that engages us every day. But few of us truly understand our creativity or how we can tap it. Why?

Where do good ideas come from? Is it possible to identify the source of generative thought and the conditions that allow it to thrive? And if so, could we eventually come to channel creativity like we do electricity?

New crative strategies and platforms are constantly evolving, taking us beyond mid-twentieth century vanguard practices such as ‘brainstorming’ and ‘lateralthinking’. Whether it’s Apple’s restrictive, closed-platform App Store, which has given birth to over 200,000 software ‘apps’, or ‘open-source’ interactive websites like Wikipedia, which harness the ‘cognitive surplus’ of hundreds of thousands of educated citizens, it’s clear that a multiplicity of practices for generating and pollinating ideas is emerging. But how can we learn from these and other extraordinary modern happenings to better harness our creative potential?

Join us at The Book Club, where we will be answering these questions and more and meeting some of the foremost thinkers on creativity, as we connect the dots between William Blake, Stella McCartney, David Lynch, Stockhausen and YOU.
